SAT Writing Error #2 Comparison Errors

SAT Writing Error #2: Comparison Errors Please correct the following sentence: 1) I like both tea and coffee, but I drink more tea than coffee. Sounds pretty good, doesnt it? Heres the correct version: 2) I like both tea and coffee, but I drink more tea than I drink coffee. or, even better: 3) I like both tea and coffee, but I drink more tea than I do coffee. This is what I call a COMPARISON problem. If you prefer, you can think of it as an APPLES AND ORANGES type problem. You know the old saying: you cant compare apples and oranges? What this means is that you cannot compare two inherently different things, even if the construction makes it obvious to you what is being said. For example, if you take the original sentence literally, it means that you drink far more tea than coffee drinks tea. The COMPARISON RULE tells us that this phrasing is incorrect. You must compare how much tea you DRINK to how much coffee you DRINK. Another example would be this: 1) The players on my team are better than your team. should be changed to: 2) The players on my team are better than the players on your team. or, even better: 3) The players on my team are better than those on your team. This is because you must compare PLAYERS to other PLAYERS, instead of comparing the PLAYERS to a TEAM. Sure, it seems unnecessary, and people rarely speak like this, but its still technically an error, and the SAT Writing section tests this error quite frequently. So heres my main tip: IF YOU EVER SPOT A COMPARISON SENTENCE ON THE SAT WRITING (tip: keep an eye out for the word THAN, which is a huge giveaway), chances are that the error tested is a COMPARISON ERROR. -Brian

Comparisons Of Ancient Cosmogonies, Platonic And Biblical...

Comparisons of Ancient Cosmogonies Cosmogony myths and stories are seen throughout many cultures and religions and more often then not they overlap with one another sharing many similarities. Although they share similarities they can also have stark differences. This essay will look at the similarities and differences of the Hesiodic, Platonic and Biblical cosmogonies and why this may be, focusing on divine craftsmanship/creation of the world, the creation of man and woman and paradise and the humans fall from it. Firstly, the overarching similarity between these 3 myth traditions is their purpose. These myths were there to provide answers and to explain why the world is the way it is, therefore a reason behind many of the†¦show more content†¦Although all traditions have chaos brought to order the obvious difference between having creators and Gaia mother earth, is the idea of this ordered world being innately good or bad. The creator myths paint the world as inherently good, for example, in Genesis it is Yahweh’s will that the universe would be good - â€Å"and God saw that it was good† (Genesis 1.10 ). Similarly in the Timaeus, Plato has the Demiurge and the idea of good fused together – â€Å"He was good†¦ and being free from jealousy he desired that all things be like himself† (Timaeus 4). In contrast to the above examples, Hesiod’s Theogony holds a very pessimistic view of the world explaining it to be inherently bad. This is particularl y seen in his account of the five ages of men, which will be discussed later, and in the generational rivalry that is ongoing from the beginning of the myth. It is suggested by E.E Pender that Plato’s Timaeus myth is aiming to replace the ‘moral chaos’ that is seen in the Theogony, as he could not believe that the world is built around deception and violence. It can be argued that Plato wrote this new creation myth to make the world good but also in a way that science and math could be added. It is unclear if Hesiod made up the Theogony or simply wrote a well-known story down. A big

Edgar Allen Poe Analytical Essay - 2208 Words

When looking at a piece of literature through a psychological approach it is easy to apply Sigmund Freud’s theories of the id, ego, and superego, which focus on conscious and unconscious behavior. When analyzing many of Poe’s works, critics tend to look through a psychological lens. Specifically in Poe’s The Black Cat. Some critics believe that Poe’s alcoholism is reflected in the piece, but many, such as James W. Gargano â€Å"advised the tales readers to avoid the biographical pitfall of seeing Poe and the first-person narrator of The Black Cat as ‘identical literary twins’† (Piacentino 1). It is due to his childhood that Poe’s narrator in The Black Cat subconsciously places animals before humans, thus leading to him to murder his wife.†¦show more content†¦Freud interpreted these theories, and came up with his own theory that â€Å"intrapsychic conflicts (conflicts with in the individual) between basic biological urg es and societal standards lead to abnormal behavior† (Bruce 2). Sigmund Freud’s theories are relevant because subconsciously Poe’s narrator in The Black Cat has suppressed his negative feelings toward humans. It is this precise unconscious thinking that Freud bases human nature upon. Understanding how ones mind works is important in order to analyze ones actions. This is important in The Black Cat because very early on the narrator reveals his overwhelming love for animals, and how he places them before humans. When the narrator relays the story the reader learns that he is awaiting execution for the murder of his wife (Piacentino 2). French critic Gerard Genette who specializes in the study of narrative theory notes â€Å"narration always says less than it knows, but it often makes known more then it says† (Piacentino 2). This is true of the autobiographical narrative of The Black Cat. The narrator is trying to present himself as a calm man with self cont rol, however the more he talks the more he leaks his insanity. He offers rationalizations for his past actions, and facts about his childhood. The narrator, by the end of the story, has revealed himself to be a vicious and violent abuser of animals and people alike.
